Why We Can't Sleep in Early Alzheimer's: The New Science of Brain Inflammation

The new study found that in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, these microglia become "overactive". Instead of quietly doing their jobs, they overreact to the presence of early amyloid plaques. This overreaction causes neuroinflammation, which is essentially "brain swelling" at a microscopic level. It is this inflammation—not the physical presence of the plaques—that disrupts the deep, restorative sleep known as NREM sleep.
A Breakthrough in Sleep Restoration
What makes this discovery so exciting is that it offers a new way to help patients without having to solve the incredibly difficult problem of clearing those sticky plaques out of the brain.
In research models, scientists found that by temporarily dampening or removing these overactive immune cells, they could restore more than two hours of sleep per day. Importantly, this improvement happened even though the amyloid plaques were still there.
